Lena paused on the frozen path she walked. It was beginning to snow again, she noticed, looking around at the landscape around her. She rarely came to this park, which was a shame, for it must be lovely even when not blanketed in snow. In fact, she only came for the same reason she now was here. Unconsciously, her arms snaked around her middle. Oh, she wasn’t cold. Even if she hadn’t been a vampire, she was dressed warmly. No, Lena was trying to keep herself from falling apart again.
She had meant to arrive before Daniel, so that she could be completely prepared to do what she had to. But at the last second her resolve had faltered, reducing her to sobs, curled where she had fallen on her bedroom floor. It had taken her some time to find her control, and now she would surly arrive after the other vampire. Lena sought that control now, trying to harden herself. She could be strong. She had to be.
When she had made the date to meet here, she had expected a pleasant evening, filled with the type of conversation only she and her some-times lover shared, mixed with a few activities, and most likely ending in his arms. Lena’s arms tightened and she closed her eyes. It wasn’t very often that she and Daniel got to meet, but they had been meeting for far longer than was probably healthy. Lena could remember every kiss, every touch, every time they had made love. Each of those memories was like a knife to her heart. It was, quite possibly, just as bad as the first time.
When Daniel had first come into her life, eighty years ago, Lena had fallen hard. It had been stupid of her: she was far too professional to let a casual lover become anything more. But for the first time, she was in a position where she could. Lena never would have had the strength in her to do as Vlad did and create a more lasting love from her human lovers, and the immortals of her acquaintance were not her lovers. Until Daniel, that is. When he had had to leave her, it had broken what was left of her still heart. He had come back when he was able, but the damage had been done. To further complicate things, he was also supposed to be her enemy. Though she had let him back into her arms, Lena never let him back in her heart that way.
But it appeared the small amount she had let him in was enough to hurt her now. Lena lifted a hand and dashed away a traitorous tear. She would not cry. She would not. Vlad had been impossible to reason with when he had discovered her indiscretion. Tonight she’d end it once and for all.
Taking a deep breath, Lena opened her eyes and continued down the path. She hadn’t really specified a place, so she wasn’t entirely sure where she would come across him. As she walked, the brunette was rehearsing what she wanted to tell Daniel. How did one tell another that you could never see them again? How did you make them understand, when you aren’t even sure of yourself? How do you end something you don’t want to end?
‘You have your family,’ Lena told herself. ‘You don’t need anything else.’ The solid rock that was Vlad and the comfort that was Mirielle; giggling with Rajni, talking with Josef, making love with Ben, arguing with Fin. She didn’t need anything else; no one else. She squared her shoulders, taking strength from the completely uncomforting thought.
Up ahead, she spied a familiar form leaning against a lamp post, illuminated by the soft light. He looked completely unaware of the world, but Lena doubted that was the case. Seeing him, Lena longed to put this off as long as she could; to lose herself and her misery in his embrace. But that would only make this harder. Best make it immediately-spare herself the pain.
“A Lefevre, standing in plain sight in Quinn territory,” Lena said, approaching the other vampire. A smile turned the corners of her lips. “One might think you want to be found.”
