Habits
Apollo becomes very irritable after dark. People tend to avoid him because he loses his curious attitude to a cynicism unparalleled. During the day he rides his chariot across the sky, and glows with a brilliance of illuminating the world from the mysterious night.
Apollo is a master of medicine, and well, he’s taken a particular liking to the prescription drugs he’s given to humans. A little bit of Vicodin, a little bit of Xantax… maybe Ritalin. Of course, Apollo assumes he can’t be addicted, after all, they heal, not afflict.
Personality
Apollo is arrogant. Everybody else, particularly humans, seems bestial to him, because he surrounds himself with what he considers to be higher art. He believes his music is unparalled and anybody who disagrees; well he just might punish you for it. Apollo is an athlete, and the laurel branch symbolizes winning, so it goes without saying that he likes to be the best.
Curiosity also dominates Apollo’s personality. He searches for truth and understanding, and therefore is very perceptive. He has a habit of knowing what people are thinking before they do. He hates lies, not only because of the confusion they cause but he thinks that misinformation does the world a disservice. Not only does Apollo seek the truth, but he seeks a higher truth. He can often come across as distantly philosophical, and search for airy, irresolute conclusions about life and what it means. Apollo’s search to be right can turn into an obsession at some times and he seems very troubled and afflicted while mysteries are clouded to him.
It takes a lot to shake Apollo. He has an incredible capacity for moderation, and likes to remain in control (The exception of course, being his fancy for chemicals). He seems to maintain an air of interested observer, and therefore can come seem apathetic. Apollo’s rational side dictates his behaviour, and therefore it is difficult to pinpoint his emotions. He likes to maintain order and whim disturbs him. He often analyzes situations and people instead of relying on his intuition.
Family;; Keeps Us Insane
Parents: Leto and Zeus
Siblings: Artemis (twin), innumerable half-siblings
Family Dynamics: He has a good relationship with his twin, Artemis. They are similar in some ways- they both love the hunt and the bow and arrows. They also compliment each other with the sun/moon and the natural/intellectual.
History
Zues had an affair with Leto, and Hera banished her to give birth on the floating isle of Delos. Although Artemis was born easily, she was in labor for nine days to give birth to Apollo. Since that time she has been haunted by monsters that Apollo and Artemis have warded away. One of these monsters was a python that Apollo slew. In another defence of his mother’s honor, Apollo avenged Leto against Niobe, who boasted havng fourteen beautiful children. Apollo killed her sons as they trained with poison arrows.
Coronis was a sort lived romance for she was in live with Ischys. However they had a child, Asclepius, who was killed by Zues for trying to resurrect the dead. In revenge, Apollo killed the Cyclops that made the bolt and he was sentenced to a year of hard labor. Apollo fought against the Greeks in the Trojan War by infecting them with plague arrows. He guided the arrow of Paris to strike Achilles in the heel.
Apollo has had several lovers, notably, Daphne, who was a nymph. Apollo was struck with Cupid’s bow and Daphne was struck with a lead bow to make her repulsed. Apollo chased her through the forest until she prayed to the river god, who helped her escape by changing her into a Laurel tree. Usually unwilling to fraternize with humans, Apollo did end up falling in love with a princess named Leucothea. He would disguise himself as her mother, Orchamus, in order to sneak into her room to conduct the affair. Clytia, her sister found out and told their mother, who buried Leucothea alive. Apollo turned Clytia into a sunflower, doomed to watch him pass every day in the sun chariot. Apollo had a son (Aristaeus) by the nymph, Castalia, a son (Troilus) by Hecuba Queen of Troy, fathered Ion by Creusa. On top of that, he’s had some short relationships with all manner of women. Occasionally, Apollo falls for another man, such as Hyacinth. He was an athletic man who was killed by jealous Zepheryus. Apollo turned her into a wind and turned Hyacinth into a flower. Cyparissus was another lover of Apollo’s who requested to weep forever after he accidentally killed the tame deer Apollo gave him.
Despite his numerous relationships, Apollo is also very competitive. When Hermes was born, Hermes stole Apollo’s cattle. Apollo was obviously angry at his newborn half-brother, but when the child offered him a lyre he made from the cow’s intestines, Apollo couldn’t help but love the little boy. They became tight friends and often play music together, Apollo on the lyre and Hermes on the syrinx. Other beings have tried to compete with Apollo in music. Pan, boasted such a comparison. When Midas hesitated to give the victory to Apollo, Apollo turned his ears into a donkey’s. He found it fitting for such an ass. The saryr Marsyas also attempted such a contest, but he couldn’t even play his instrument upside-down like Apollo.
Apollo was rather upset with the Dark Ages, and as the belief in the Greek Gods dwindled and Christianity took over, he became melancholy and he had no inspiration to teach the people of the world. However, as new interest grew in the ancient greeks, Apollo became interested in humanity again. He could only watch delightedly as they relearned and gained new knowledge throughout the renaissance and particularly the nineteenth century. Oh, how he adored the nineteenth century. There were so many gentlemen whom he felt emulated his intellectual superiority complexes. He wished to go down and test their arrogance and wit, but felt wrong to interfere. Now, Apollo feels like he missed his chance and bitterly insists on leaving the mortals alone. Deep down, he would still like to return to earth to be a part of the innovation- and to fix the steadily declining music. What the hell were they calling it these days? C-rap? He generally tries to distract himself from the humans' fascinating medical achievements by bopping around with Hermes.
Extra
It’s been a while since chariots were in fashion. Nowadays Apollo likes to ride a glittering, golden motorbike across the sky. Also, Apollo tends to dress with an air of old formality. He considers himself to be such a superior intellectual and musician; he adopts a Oxford style of dressing. He looks sharp and scholarly, although some might complain that it hides his radiant, sun-touched skin.
