Miles, and miles of ocean lay between the lands. Who’s to say what could lie beyond these tremendous gaps, with depths so treacherous the sun itself flees at the sight of them? Monsters of old or ancient cities lost to time, perhaps even some new creatures lurking in the dismal waters just waiting for their chance at the spotlight. Above the tossing waters and all its demonic beasts lay a cheerful blue sky dotted with pale wisps that were pushed along painfully slowly by the warm winds. The pure heavens were enough to banish the images of the sea’s slimy occupants from any troubled mind. Yet the focus of the immortal eye isn’t on the ocean or the never-ending sky that stretched above it, this time but rather a small plot of undiscovered land hidden well from the blaring horns, blinking lights, and toxic smog of this unnatural generation. This particular island was covered not in a deadly untamed jungle or rocky hills as so many of the others have come to be. This land was fertile and green sprouting up countless vegetation to support all manners of life that had first clawed their ways onto the prehistoric shores. Proud and old evergreens stood all over the uncharted paradise shading the earth from the hot sun and homes for many beasts both feathered and furred. However there was one creature stirring around the land that was much too large to fit in one of the husky trees.
A young buck trotted between the earthly pillars the patches of sunlight reflecting off his bronze eyes. The cautious little thing was hardly grown. Small antlers topped off the angelic head of this ignorant creature giving him some standing among his kind, already strong and tall for his age the horns of this male deer showed nothing but promise in his near future. Everything was peaceful around this immature animal. As his amber fur covered body twisted and his hooves bent the dew heavy this prized buck made his way to a spot he was more then familiar with. Stepping from behind a tree the deer exited the grove and entered a small clearing filled with emerald blades of grass and sweet flowers. The sun was ducked happily behind a few of the taller trees making the already mystical spot seem as if it were the Garden of Eden. Everything was as it should be. The dear bent his head and began nibbling at the tuffs of grass.
While this tranquil scene of peace and harmony was unfolding a being crouched on a bed moist pine needles hid her simple form behind the wide trunks that separated her from the unwise animal. Artemis, the virgin mistress of hunt was eyeing the beast. He was a fine example of the game these mortals had left behind in pursuit of their microchips and atom bombs. Drawing one of her famous silver arrows from its lustrous quiver the immortal dared not make a sound, even her breathing was as silent as the grave. With loose bits of copper hair blown about softly by the wind the celestial being nocked her arrow ignoring the urge to tighten the messy bun. Taking aim the goddess waited for the perfect moment. The sun however did not plan for her to get the shot she so yearned for. Light shifting suddenly from behind the tree to fall directly on the tools of this famed hunter a reflection of her brother’s element off her silver bow alerted the once calm creature to the presence of some malicious force. Senses now spiked the beast began to flee. Enraged the tall woman took off after her prize keeping her bow loaded and ready. The chase was short. The deer found himself back in the thicket and his distressed mind was having trouble navigating around the bulky elms and evergreens. The goddess however could keep her eyes locked on the sprinting animal while still dodging ever obstacle that through itself into her path.
Artemis saw the terrified creature crane his muscular neck to catch sight of his pursuer. Now this was the shot she had been waiting for. Releasing the pearly string with a snap the metallic arrow flew, signing demonically as it sliced the air. A slight squish and then a loud thwap were the only sounds that followed the weapon’s devilish lament. The glinting tip of the arrow had buried itself deep within the bark of a healthy elm and the now ruby shaft held its spot well in the very center of the peaceful creature’s eye. The gray eyed killer emerged from her wooded hiding place appearing as if she had just stepped out of a history book. The woman, being a lover to the past, was clad in a knee-high tunic she often dawned in the days where she was worshiped openly by the people. Slowly approaching her kill Artemis wrapped her hand firmly around the stiff metal most of which was soaked with the slick blood of the buck. Pulling the arrow out with unnatural ease Artemis stared down at the crimson blood which now coated her pale hand. “Not much of a challenge. . .”
